The Cable Energía network was founded in 2018 by Jesús Nieto and Ignacio López. According to Pledge Times, these two founding engineers with international experience in energy and infrastructure markets will continue to lead the company now acquired by Acciona Energia.

Shell Recharge took over the company, which specialises in charging infrastructure, in 2022. According to Patrick Carré, Senior Vice President Mobility for Europe and Africa at Shell, the sale is “in line with Shell’s strategy of continuous improvement of the Mobility & Convenience network and targeted investment in public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in key markets of the energy transition.” He pointed out that this is not a withdrawal from Spain and Portugal, explaining: “Drivers on the Iberian Peninsula will continue to have access to a wide range of Shell mobility products offered by our partner Disa.”

The electric car charging network Cable Energía currently comprises 396 charging points strategically located in high-traffic areas such as restaurants, shopping centres, supermarkets, hotels, and highways on the Iberian Peninsula. A further 321 charging points are under construction or have yet to be connected to the electricity grid.

For the Spanish energy company Acciona, the acquisition of Cable Energia is “an important step in its electromobility strategy”. With the takeover, the company’s own charging network on the Iberian Peninsula will grow by 396 charging points, which will be strategically located in high-traffic areas such as restaurants, shopping centres, supermarkets, hotels and freeways

In 2024, Acciona Energia announced the installation of 1,000 further charging points in Spain. The planned charging infrastructure expansion will include a mix of AC and DC charging options with outputs between 22 and 180 kW, with more than 400 of the new charging points offering between 100 and 120 kW. Acconia Energía says it offers access to more than 4,000 charging points, both owned and from third parties, located in urban centres and the main interurban routes. According to the company, it is currently installing “the largest on-street charging hub in Madrid”.
