Madrid claims clean air
Madrid’s new conservative city government attempted to roll back the driving bans in the inner city, causing a series of protests. The penalties for driving in the environmental zone with a combustion vehicle have now been reinstated, following a court decision on a lawsuit filed by environmental activists, including Greenpeace.
Back to the smog cloud: Madrid protests
In Madrid on Saturday, thousands of protestors took to the streets to demand the reinstatement of the city’s anti-pollution laws. Madrid’s newly-elected conservative Mayor has decided to reverse the “Madrid Central” anti-pollution plan that was brought in by his predecessor only last November.
Coup e-scooter sharing adds prepaid minute-packages
Bosch’s e-scooter sharing service Coup is now offering prepaid by-the-minute packages without a minimum rental period in Berlin, Paris and Madrid as a new alternative. Users can choose between three different packages with 100, 200 or 500 minutes each.
Barcelona is acquiring new electric and hybrid buses
The Catalan metropolis wants to reduce the emissions of its public transport system. To this end, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona aims to purchase 254 environmentally friendly buses. The project is financed with a loan from the European Investment Bank.
EMT Madrid orders 15 BYD electric buses
EMT Madrid, one of the biggest public transport operators in the Spanish capital, has placed an order with BYD for the delivery of 15 electric buses. These are 12-metre-long buses that are due to arrive in Madrid at the beginning of next year.

The Spanish supplier Wallbox Chargers has retrofitted its Wallbox models Pulsar and Commander. Both the first device for private use and the latter for public use offer new functionalities, more security and greater robustness.
Spain: Badajoz deploys 15 BYD electric buses
BYD has delivered the 15 electric buses ordered last year for the Spanish city of Badajoz. The public transport operator Tubasa has further already put them into operation. In the near future, BYD will also deliver eight electric buses ordered by Tusgsal for use in the city of Badalona near Barcelona.
Plugsurfing partners with Spain’s EasyCharger
The Berlin-based Plugsurfing has entered into a cooperation with the Spanish charging point operator EasyCharger, a Nissan affiliate, to further expand the number of charging stations currently integrated into the Plugsurfing network in Spain.
Madrid: Seat plans eXS electric scooter sharing project
Seat has sold more than 5,000 units of its eXS electric kick scooter, which was developed in collaboration with Segway, and is now entering into a strategic partnership with the startup UFO to make 530 of its electric pedal scooters available to the public in Madrid via an app.
Irizar to deliver electric buses to Germany
The Spanish electric bus manufacturer Irizar has received new orders from Germany and Switzerland. A contract has been signed with Rheinbahn in Düsseldorf, Germany, for the delivery of ten electric buses. Irizar has also been awarded the contract to supply the electric bus system for the Swiss city of Schaffhausen.
Solaris ramping up electric bus market share
Last year Solaris delivered 107 electric buses to customers across Europe. According to the Polish-Spanish bus manufacturer, it held a market share of 17% of all electric bus sales in Europe in 2018, the overview shows.
Spain: First all-electric truck by Irizar
The Spanish manufacturer Irizar, known for its electric buses, has now introduced an electric truck called the ie Truck. The 18-tonne truck will be available both as a purely electric vehicle and with an additional range extender running on natural gas.
Spain subsidising electric mobility with €45 million
The Spanish government has adopted the new edition of its electric mobility subsidy programme. The new package, called MOVES, came into force on 16 February with a budget of 45 million euros. The focus is on promoting electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
Silence now sells electric scooters to private clients
The Spanish e-scooter manufacturer Silence is moving beyond its previously B2B only approach to selling electric scooters to private customers as well. A limited sales run will start in Spain and the S01 carries over the removable and wheelable battery from the commercial model.
Spain’s Balearic Islands pass climate protection law
The autonomous government of Spain’s Balearic Islands has passed a climate protection law stipulating the cessation of the use of fossil fuels by 2050. The law also includes a ban on the registration of new diesel cars from 2025 and new petrol cars from 2035.
Endesa cooperating with SABA to install EV chargers
The Spanish energy supplier Endesa is cooperating with parking management company SABA to install up to 400 charging points for electric cars in its carparks. The first 144 of the 22 kW charging points have already been put into operation in 36 locations across 14 Spanish cities.
Electric bendy buses arrive in Barcelona
You could call these electric buses a “streetcar of desire” given they look pretty, are articulated, 18 metres long and look like a tram. The four buses made by Irizar have arrived in Barcelona and will serve on route H16 starting this month.

The Spanish government has decreed that major gas station operators have to provide EV charging stations within the next two years, and that failure to do so will result in fines of up to 30 million euros. Yet, it was not the money but time frame the association of pit stop owners complained about when calling the measure “absolutely hasty”.

Enel-owned utility Endesa announces their plan to cast a far reaching network of electric car charging stations across Spain. Their new dedicated venture Endesa X will install more than 8,500 public charge points with another 100,000 at private locations by 2023.
