High-ranking drive developer Vineet Mehta leaves Tesla
During this time, Metha wants to spend more time looking after his family. However, he did not specify how long his self-imposed break would last. He wants to hang up his hat “for a while,” according to the LinkedIn post. He is applying for a job as “Sr. Pickup & Drop-off coordinator role with the family office,” Metha writes jokingly.
“I have decided to leave of my own accord feeling the greatest degree of satisfaction with the work and the team,” the drive developer continues. If he has his way, his departure will not affect Tesla that much: “For the last few years, my goal has been to set the battery chemistry and powertrain/vehicle roadmap in the best possible place, and along the way, enable my team members to be more capable while making myself less useful. I am happy to say that I was able to achieve that outcome.”
About a year ago, Tesla’s Head of Engineering, Drew Baglino, resigned, also after 18 years with the company. According to Metha, however, Tesla is now so well-positioned organisationally that it can cope with departures like Baglino’s (and his own) without any problems. “Despite what you may read in the news, next generation of leaders are coming up and Tesla’s technical future looks so bright we may all need sunglasses to see it,” said the now former Director of Battery Technology and Drive Architecture.
Metha joined Tesla in May 2007 as a simple staff engineer, years before the premiere of the first Model S. At the time, he was already involved in technology development for electric car drives and lithium-ion batteries – for example, the design of battery packs, but also battery ageing and degradation. Over the years, he has held various positions of responsibility within drive development, rising to Manager, Senior Manager and then Director in 2018.
