OMV to retire a third of CNG fuel stations in Austria
Recently, the mineral oil company OMV announced that it would be closing all of its public hydrogen refuelling stations in Austria due to a lack of profitability. Now it is the turn of the natural gas petrol pumps: ten of OMV’s 28 CNG filling stations in Austria will be closed this summer. OMV calculates that out of the over 7.4 million registered motor vehicles in Austria, only around 4,350 natural gas vehicles are currently on the roads.
“The limited acceptance of natural gas technology compared to other alternative forms of propulsion makes it necessary to close unprofitable refuelling points. We are continuously monitoring the Austrian mobility market and do not expect the trend to reverse,” explained Michal Kubinec, Head of OMV’s petrol station business.
At the same time, the company is investing heavily in electromobility, among other things, for example, setting up a charging infrastructure subsidiary named eMotion in 2023. Last year, OMV Petrom also made an acquisition to take over the position of Romania’s biggest EV charging provider.
