The mineral oil group and former Smatrics investor OMV will contribute to charging infrastructure in Europe with its new brand, eMotion. The company plans to set up 2,000 fast charging points in four European countries by 2030.

The newly formed brand will focus on installing 150 to 300 kW charging points in Austria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary. OMV plans to offer an eMotion app with functions to find charging stations nearby, manage charging processes and process payments securely and easily and is expected to go live before the end of the year.

Until recently, the Austrian oil and gas company was one of the investors in Austrian charging network provider Smatrics. In August, it was announced that OMV and Siemens had transferred their shares in the e-mobility service provider to Verbund. OMV joined Smatrics in 2017, taking a 40 per cent stake.

“Under the eMotion brand, everything from the proprietary software to the app to the charging plugs comes from OMV,” the company wrote. The company says its first OMV charge point was already opened in Austria in January.

The Austrian oil and gas company is planning its transition with forays into clean energy on multiple fronts. The has also begun exploring hydrogen infrastructure for heavy goods vehicles in Austria.
