Changan opens its first full-fledged overseas NEV plant in Thailand
Changan built its Thai factory on a site spanning about 600 acres in the WHA Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 4, located in Pluak Daeng District, Rayong Province. The plant comprises a body shop, paint shop, powertrain workshop, battery assembly, and general assembly. The company has invested around 10 billion baht (approximately 268 million euros) in the local production facility.
Along with integrating all core production processes at the factory, Changan has promised a high degree of localisation. The company aims to achieve 68% localisation this year and increase it to 80% by 2028. It expects to create more than 30,000 jobs with this plant in the country.
Initially, Changan’s new facility in Rayong has an annual production capacity of 100,000 units. The company plans to expand it to 200,000 units in 2027. The Chinese automaker aims to export its Thai-made models to other ASEAN markets, as well as Australia and New Zealand, to strengthen its global presence. According to an earlier report from The Nation, the company is even eyeing the UK and left-hand drive markets with the NEVs made at the Rayong plant.
Changan launched the Deepal S05 in Thailand at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show in March and used today’s occasion to deliver the first batch of the compact SUV to customers. The company offers this model as a BEV with a range of 470 km (NEDC) and also as an EREV with an electric-only range of 170 km (NEDC) and a total range of over 1,000 km.
Following the establishment of its first overseas NEV manufacturing plant, Changan plans to open a research and development centre in Thailand. The company intends to use the R&D facility as a regional hub to work on its right-hand drive vehicles.
