Local media reports that the charging hubs will be built on disused land around rest stops, storage areas or former tollbooths. Additionally, the charging stations will be accompanied by amenities such as cafes, restaurants, shops, parking spaces, as well as toilets and children’s playgrounds.

To be specific, the eight locations in question are as follows:

  • La Caridad (Asturias), on the right at km 490 of the A-8
  • Penagos (Cantabria), on both sides at km 208.5 of the A-8
  • Calatayud (Zaragoza), on the left at km 234 of the A-2
  • Montoro (Córdoba), on both sides at km 353 of the A-4
  • Perales de Tajuña (Madrid), on the left at km 35 of the A-3
  • Saelices (Cuenca), on both sides at km 99 of the A-3
  • Algemesí (Valencia), on both sides at km 541 of the AP-7
  • La Roca del Vallés (Barcelona), on both sides at km 129 of the AP-7

The initiative will serve as a pilot project designed to “catalyse private investment in electric charging infrastructure by providing a stable framework for the installation and operation of charging points”. Initial plans for the construction of charging sites in Montoro, Algemesi, Perales de Tajuña and Penagos are said to have been approved by the Ministry of Transport, with Spain’s General Directorate of Roads set to study the possibility of carrying out other, similar projects in future.
