Ford launches AWD variant of E-Transit Custom
What we do know is that the familiar rear-wheel drive of the standard E-Transit Custom will be expanded to include an additional electric drive unit for the front wheels. In a press release, Ford stated: “The two independent front and rear drive units provide optimum torque to all four wheels, maximising traction and capability on steep inclines, and enabling enhanced vehicle dynamics, even in extremely slippery ice or muddy driving conditions.”
No information or performance data has yet been shared on the dual-motor AWD concept, with Ford set to share this in due course as the sales launch approaches. However, the firm has stated that it wants to expand the ‘productivity’ of the E-Transit Custom lineup with AWD, stating the AWD model will “suit customers requiring enhanced traction, such as businesses in the Nordic, Alpine, and Highlands regions or leisure vehicle users.”
The current RWD E-Transit Custom combines a 64kWh NMC battery with an electric motor on the rear axle, which is available in three power levels of 100, 160, and 210kW. The maximum WLTP range is 337km and maximum DC charging power is 125kW, with Ford specifying a charging time of 39 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent. The net payload is up to 1,011kg with a load volume of up to 6.8 cubic meters, plus a towing capacity of 2.3 tons.
As is well known, the E-Transit Custom from Ford now also forms the basis for the e-Transporter from VW Commercial Vehicles, which is offered with very similar key data. Both models not only share the technology, but are also built together in Turkey. It is therefore quite possible that a 4MOTION version of the e-Transporter will soon follow from VWN.
