Mercedes to install 500 ultra-fast charging stalls at US retail sites
Each site is planned to feature up to ten charging stalls. As Mercedes-Benz uses Alpitronic fast-chargers in the US, specifically the HYC400, these will offer up to 400 kW, and have both a CCS-1 and a NACS connection.
The initial rollout will cover 20 locations across Federal Realty’s national portfolio of open-air shopping centres, including Camelback Colonnade in Phoenix, Lawrence Park Shopping Center in Pennsylvania, and Shops at Pembroke Gardens in Florida. The first chargers are expected to become operational in 2026.
Mercedes points out that, unlike traditional site-by-site installations, the agreement enables a portfolio-driven rollout, said to simplify deployment and support scalable infrastructure growth. The partnership is part of Mercedes-Benz HPC’s strategy to expand its premium charging network to all EV brands while supporting the shift to sustainable, emission-free mobility.
Mercedes-Benz HPC currently operates over 400 charging stalls across 14 US states, with more than 2,000 stalls in development. The company says it has already invested $1 billion to install 2,500 charging stalls by 2027, aiming to deliver performance, reliability, and seamless integration with drivers’ everyday lives using 100% clean energy.
“EV drivers are looking for more than just fast charging, they want an experience that fits effortlessly into their lives,” said Andrew Cornelia, President & CEO at Mercedes-Benz HPC North America. “Federal Realty’s national portfolio of properties meets this need in a meaningful way by placing chargers at destinations people already trust and enjoy. Together, we’re tapping into a growing customer sentiment: charging isn’t just about power — it’s about place.”
“We’re proud to support a new, scalable model for EV infrastructure—one that reflects our DNA and our focus on enduring value,” added Don Wood, President & CEO at Federal Realty Investment Trust. “This collaboration adds a forward-looking amenity to some of the country’s most consistently successful retail properties, enhancing the customer experience and reinforcing the strength of our portfolio.”
On top of setting up its own HPC network in the US, Mercedes is also part of Ionna – a joint venture between eight carmakers, looking to set up a fast-charging network in the US. The initial seven carmakers joined forces in the summer of 2023, and Toyota joined about a year later. The joint venture received antitrust approvals in February and announced its headquarters in Durham in the US state of North Carolina, as well as the appointment of several key executives to its leadership team in June.
The joint venture opened its first charging site in the US in February, specifically in Apex, North Carolina. The goal is to deploy over 1,000 EV charging points by the end of the year.
