Evolt installs chargers at nine historic sites in Wales

Evolt Charging has deployed 22kW EV charge points at nine Cadw heritage sites across Wales, including Tintern Abbey and Harlech Castle. The project, funded by Transport for Wales, also equips Cadw depots to support its new electric fleet, bridging rural infrastructure gaps.

Evolt Charging, part of SWARCO Smart Charging, has installed “a series of 22kW public charge points” across nine Cadw sites in Wales. The company does not say exactly how many chargers were installed. A press image shows two columns with four charge points in Tintern, but it is not certain that this is the same for all nine locations.

The charging infrastructure was funded by Transport for Wales as part of its Sustainable Development Plan to build a greener national transport network. Cadw’s leadership in electrifying its operational fleet was a decisive factor in securing funding, says Evolt Charging. The division is the first within the Welsh Government to transition its maintenance fleet to electric vehicles, aligning with its Net Zero strategic goals.

Evolt has also deployed wallbox charging units at Cadw depots in Caernarfon, Caerphilly, Crumlin and Haverfordwest. These charging points support Cadw’s new fleet of electric cars and vans used by regional maintenance teams who frequently travel between sites each day. RFID cards issued to staff enable top-ups at public Cadw charging points en route if required.

“The introduction of reliable and convenient charging infrastructure at nine of Cadw’s historic sites will enable visitors and local residents alike to charge their vehicles, in turn supporting local businesses and communities. For those travelling in the area, it will be useful in drawing more people to discover Wales’ rich history and what the surrounding areas have to offer,” said Jack Sargeant MS, Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership. “Crucially, it will also help to address gaps in public EV infrastructure – particularly in rural areas – giving EV drivers, as well as our maintenance staff, greater confidence that they can travel sustainably across Wales.”

Justin Meyer, Managing Director of SWARCO Smart Charging, added: “We’re proud to support Cadw and Transport for Wales in delivering reliable EV charging at some of Wales’ most historic sites. This infrastructure will encourage EV adoption and aid Cadw’s fleet transition.”
