KleanDrive and Welch Group to repower Renault truck

KleanDrive and UK logistics provider Welch Group announce a partnership to convert Renault D-Series 18-tonne rigid HGVs to fully electric drivetrains using KleanDrive’s modular plug-and-play system. Welch Group will complete the installation and any required refurbishment of the truck chassis, body and interior.

According to KleanDrive, its electric truck repowering solution is designed to offer segment-leading usable battery capacity, range, purchase price and operating costs. The system will integrate the latest generation of KleanDrive’s modular, model-specific e-drivetrain featuring Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells from CATL and Voith Electrical Drive System propulsion, housed with power electronics in a dedicated framework and skid system. The usable battery capacity is 352 kWh.

The diesel components removed during repowering will be returned to customers for reuse within their conventional fleets. Welch Group will install the system and optionally refurbish the interior to extend vehicle life.

“We see this deal as the future of repowering trucks,” KleanDrive founder Joe Tighe stated. “Our modular, plug-and-play drivetrain can be fitted to the vehicle in a day, alongside other refurbishment work if required. This means the vehicle is off the road for the minimum time, before returning to work on a fleet with lower running costs, zero tailpipe emissions and a quieter, smoother experience for both drivers and passengers.”

“We’re delighted to work with KleanDrive to convert existing HGVs to electric power and have been impressed with its engineering quality and overall solution,” added Chris Welch, Managing Director at Welch Group. “KleanDrive offers a very neat package, making installation and maintenance easier to complete – it is really just two boxes to fit to the chassis and then plug-and-play.”

This is not the first time KleanDrive signed a deal to repower heavy-duty vehicles. However, its system has been primarily used in buses. For example, the British company recently announced a partnership with UK bus operator First Bus, for whom it will convert 30 Wrightbus Streetdecks from diesel power to battery-electric.
