Yasa claims new electric motor record – 550 kW at just 13 kg

The British electric motor specialist owned by Mercedes-Benz has developed what it claims is the highest power density electric motor to date. Yasa’s prototype delivers 550 kW while weighing only 13.1 kg, equating to a power density of 42 kW/kg.

Neither Mercedes-Benz nor Yasa has issued an official statement or external verification for the record. The figures were shared by Tim Woolmer, Chief Technology Officer at Yasa, in a LinkedIn post, where he referred to it as “a new world record.”

“Last week at Yasa, we believe we unofficially (and a little accidentally!) achieved the highest power density ever recorded for an electric motor in it’s class (and possibly for any motor),” Woolmer wrote. He cited specific data of 670 volts and 850 amps sustained over five seconds. The quoted 13.1 kg includes all magnets and mechanical components (housing, rotor structure, and shaft) intended for the production model.

Yasa specialises in compact axial flux motors. Mercedes-Benz acquired the Oxford-based firm in 2021. In 2023, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven show car was unveiled with Yasa axial flux motors, and this June, the carmaker presented the AMG GT XX concept and features three Yasa axial flux units, promising 1,000 kW combined output.

It is unclear whether the motor tested is the same unit used in the AMG GT XX concept. Woolmer emphasised that it is not a special development with exotic materials such as cobalt-iron laminations or 3D-printed parts, but a production-ready motor “scalable to sports car volumes (10–50k units/year) at a viable cost” This hints at possible integration into upcoming Mercedes models such as the AMG GT XX.

Woolmer also suggested Yasa has yet to reach its technological limits: “More to come – many thanks to Drive System Design for pushing their dyno above the 500kW limit. We’re not done yet – we get on the ‘big dyno’ this summer.”
