BYD expands its ‘Song’ model family
New energy vehicles are booming in China, and BYD’s compact Song crossovers are particularly popular. In June alone, the company sold 59,026 units. Both the plug-in hybrids and battery-electric versions have been key in establishing BYD as a market leader in NEVs.
To strengthen its position, BYD plans to introduce additional Song variants, starting with the Song L GT, a mix between a shooting brake and a crossover SUV. Essentially, it is a sportier version of the Song L EV, which the company has offered since late 2023 from 135,800 RMB (approx. €16,100).
On 17 July, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest catalogue of models pending approval. This is the final regulatory stage in the homologation process for new cars in China. The BYD Song L GT occupies three pages in the document, which includes several images of the vehicle.
Compared to its siblings, the Song L GT stands out visually. Unlike the more conventional Song models, it defies categorisation, appearing more like a raised fastback or sporty estate car than an SUV. Only the Song L EV looks similar. While MIIT classifies it as a standard electric saloon, BYD describes it as a ‘Shooting Brake SUV’.

The Song L GT measures 4.84 m in length, 1.95 m in width, and 1.56 m in height, with a wheelbase of 2.93 m, placing it firmly in the mid-size segment with identical dimensions to its technical sibling, the Song L EV. Depending on the specification, kerb weight is 2.1 or 2.4 tonnes. The two rear-drive versions are listed under the codes ‘BYD7007BEVA3’ and ‘BYD7007BEVA4’, producing 170 kW and 230 kW, respectively.
The all-wheel-drive variant ‘BYD7007BEVA5’ has a 160 kW motor on the front axle and a 230 kW motor at the rear, delivering a top speed of 225 kph, while the base model is limited to 210 kph. BYD will use its typical LFP Blade batteries, though capacity figures are not disclosed in the documents. The closely related Song L EV features either a 71.8 kWh or 87 kWh pack, offering a CLTC range of 550 to 662 kilometres.
The Song L GT will come equipped with LiDAR as standard, enabling partial autonomous driving, as with other premium BYD models. It remains unclear whether BYD intends to export the new series to Europe.
