UK launches £25m Pavement Channels Grant
As the name already suggests, the so-called Pavement Channels Grant supports the installation of in-ground pavement channels that allow households to safely run EV charging cables from their homes to the roadside. The pavement channel systems are intended to make at-home charging more accessible in residential areas where off-street parking is unavailable.
Further information on the application process and deployment timeline for the Pavement Channels Grant is expected to be issued to local authorities shortly. What is known is that to be eligible for the grant, residents need to have planning permission to install crass-pavement charging and live in an area that takes part. The funding will be made available later this year.
The new grant forms part of a broader £63 million support package from the Department for Transport (DfT), revealed in July 2025, designed to accelerate the country’s shift to electric mobility. According to the DfT, enabling access to cheaper residential charging tariffs through pavement channels could help EV owners save up to £1,500 annually compared to fuelling a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle. The system was piloted in London last year and is now moving towards wider implementation.
Hugh Pickerill, programme manager for EV Grants and Infrastructure at the Energy Saving Trust, stated: “The EVPC grant is a welcome complement to existing funding schemes, such as the LEVI scheme, helping residents without access to off-street parking make the switch to an electric vehicle. We look forward to providing further guidance and supporting local authorities in delivering this grant across the country.”
