Some Octopus Energy customers can get a free Ohme EV charger – if they act fast

Octopus Energy has teamed up with Uber to offer free home Ohme ePod chargers to its ride-share drivers. The offer is limited to the first 1000 drivers who switch to Octopus' Intelligent Octopus Go EV tariff.

The offer includes an Ohme ePod charger worth £900 plus installation, and is available to Uber drivers who have either a recent history of EV trips or proof of a new EV on order. They must also be new or existing Octopus Energy customers who are able to have a charger installed at home and eligible for the Octopus Go tariff. There are a number of other caveats, such as having a smart meter connected at your property and having off-street parking. Uber drivers can register on this dedicated site.

The Intelligent Octopus Go tariff is Octopus Energy’s offering for automated home charging. It essentially allows customers to charge their EVs for less during off-peak times when electric rates are cheaper and automates charging to cut costs. Charging rates cost £0.07p/kWh, and there are six hours of reduced-cost energy thrown in for the rest of the home. In April, Octopus launched the Intelligent Drive Pack subscription add-on, which costs £30 per month and provides unlimited smart charging for a single EV.

It’s part of a wider push by Uber to go fully electric in London, which is already Uber’s top location worldwide for ‘electric miles’. In a statement, Octopus and Uber said that Uber drivers are switching to EVs five times faster than the general public and that the new partnership will help cut their running costs and improve air quality.

Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, said: “Uber drivers are leading the way in switching to EVs, embracing cleaner vehicles much faster than the general public. But one of the biggest barriers they continue to face is access to affordable and reliable charging. This partnership with Octopus helps tackle that, making it easier for more drivers to go electric across the UK.”

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy, added: “With over a third of Uber drivers already feeling the benefits of EVs, we’re making it even easier for more drivers to go electric. By offering a smart charging tech bundle that does the hard work for them, Uber drivers can get real savings, and offer customers a smoother ride and next level service.”
