Yamaha completes acquisition of Brose’s e-bike drive business

German supplier Brose has successfully completed the transfer of its e-bike drive business to Yamaha. For the time being, the business will continue to operate under its current name, BAT GmbH.

First announced in Spring, the deal has been awaiting approval by antitrust authorities until now. Since then, Yamaha and Brose have remained silent about the purchase price and have still not shared this information. The only thing that is clear at this stage is that Brose’s 110 employees in Berlin will be taken on by the Japanese group.

“Brose will continue to support the transition through defined services during the initial phase to ensure continuity for employees, customers and partners,” the German company said upon completion of the deal. “Brose is confident that under Yamaha Motor’s ownership, the business will thrive. Further details regarding future operations and strategic direction will be communicated by Yamaha Motor.”

With the sale of its e-bike business, which was first launched in 2014, Brose is now refocusing on its core business in the automotive industry, with the sale being part of a strategic realignment on their part. However, this realignment is set to go beyond purely refocusing on the core automotive business, as several hundred jobs are set to be cut following major financial losses. In December, Brose announced that it expected a loss of 53 million euros for 2024 and would cut 700 jobs in Germany by the end of 2025.

Yamaha, previously number five behind Brose in e-bike drives (then Bosch, Shimano, and Bafang), is not only taking over Brose’s market share but also its development department. The Japanese company wants to establish its own development base in Europe and be able to react more quickly to market developments.
