Calgary to procude 120 electric buses from Volvo

The Canadian city of Calgary is procuring 120 electric buses. The Nova LFSe+ electric buses from Volvo subsidiary Nova Bus will replace old diesel buses. Delivery will begin in 2027 and all 120 electric buses are expected to be in operation by the end of 2028.

Calgary plans to replace some of its ageing diesel bus fleet with more modern electric buses and has opted for the above-mentioned fleet of Nova’s Nova LFSe+ electric buses. In terms of technical specifications, the electric bus models run on an Akasol battery, with up to 564 kWh, powering a 200 kW electric motor, which can deliver up to 5,200 Nm of torque. The range is estimated at up to 470 km. In addition, the LSFe+ can charge at the depot or connect to overhead lines.

The government of Calgary also cited the acquisition price as a major decision behind the choice for electric buses, stating that 30-40 more buses were possible to order than would have been affordable with CNG or diesel variants. A facility renewal was also mentioned in the press release; however, no details beyond a federal investment, which is “benefiting the entire fleet” were revealed, outside of a general mention of construction jobs being created for infrastructure work.

“This investment means more reliable service, lower operating costs over time and cleaner air in our communities,” says Sharon Fleming, Director of Calgary Transit. “It also allows us to grow our fleet in a cost-effective way and prepare for future service demand.”

In 2023, the city of Calgary announced intentions to purchase 259 emissions-free buses by 2027, with financial support from the Canada Infrastructure Bank worth $164 million CAD. The Calgary Climate Strategy aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
