Serbia suspends subsidies for the purchase of new electric cars
The Ministry of the Environment has not yet disclosed exactly how many vehicles have been subsidised this year. As the purchase subsidy ranged from the equivalent of €250 to €5,000 depending on the type of vehicle, it is not immediately clear how many electric vehicles the subsidy has covered. Rather, a purely mathematical calculation yields a range of 300 to 6,000 vehicles. After all, subsidies ranged from €250 per vehicle for electric mopeds and light tricycles to a maximum of €5,000 for electric cars and electric vans.
According to the ministry, the acceptance of applications for subsidies for the purchase of new fully electric vehicles was suspended on 8 August 2025. However, the process is to be continued as soon as additional budget funds are made available, and those who have already registered their interest in the purchase subsidy will be informed accordingly.
The subsidy programme was first introduced in Serbia in 2020. At that time, pure electric cars and electric light commercial vehicles were subsidised with €5,000, while PHEVs and HEVs were subsidised with €3,500 and €2,500 respectively. Over the past five years, the Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection has subsidised more than 2,800 electric and hybrid vehicles. Since last year, only pure electric vehicles have been eligible for purchase subsidies.
When announcing the current round of subsidies in February, Environment Minister Irena Vujović hoped that the production of the new electric Fiat Grande Panda in Kragujevac, Serbia, would ‘give an additional boost to demand for subsidies, as this model of electric passenger car is also eligible for a subsidy of 5,000 euros’.
It is not yet clear to what extent buyers of the model have actually benefited from the subsidy.
