Electric bus chargers approved for San Mateo

Transit authorities in the Californian district have just approved a $36.3 million charging infrastructure agreement. It will see a range of charging facilities installed to support San Mateo's growing fleet of electric buses.

The initiative will at first see a range of hardware fitted at SamTrans’ South Base facility, including “high-capacity chargers, overhead pantograph dispensers, and upgraded electrical and communication systems” – although no details on these systems has yet been shared. San Mateo Transit currently covers 74 routes and two on-demand service areas.

SamTrans has, however, confirmed that this initial investment will be used to power the 37 electric buses currently operating out of the site, as well as support the introduction of up to 110 further ‘zero-emission’ buses in future. Whether or not these are battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell remains to be seen – the transit authority previously ordered 108 fuel cell buses from the US manufacturer New Flyer.

The US-based Clark Construction Group is a strategic partner on the project, which also includes changes to the South Base facility’s entrance. Work is set to begin later this year, although no specific dates have been provided.

The $36.3 million project is backed by a range of investors covering both federal and state organisations, such as the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Bay Area Air District (BAAD), the California Local Partner Program Competitive (LPP-C fund, and the Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP).

Zhiming Fan, SamTrans’ Director of Infrastructure, said: “This investment is about more than just buses – it’s about cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future for San Mateo County. By building the infrastructure now, we’re ensuring that zero-emission transit will be the backbone of our service for decades to come.”
