New EV charging infrastructure for Spanish city of Murcia

The first of 98 new EV charging points have just opened in Murcia, as part of a contract signed between Iberdrola España and Murcia City Council back in December. The agreement will see a total of 190 charging bays installed across the city.

The first charging stations have been installed next to Iberdrola España’s offices, but the rest are set to be located across the city upon completion. This includes 40 fast charging points with an output of 50 kW, with the others being semi-fast chargers (22kW). Iberdrola España states this will enable up to 190 vehicles to charge at the same time, presumably through dual-port charging, although it’s not clear whether every charging tower will have this given the numbers.

Like other Iberdrola chargers, the Murcian chargers will be available to book through the company’s public charging app. This allows users to locate and see information on Iberdrola chargers plus reserve and pay from their mobile phones. Iberdrola has confirmed that the 50kW chargers will also feature card payment terminals.

José Ballesta, the Mayor of Murcia, commented: “The Murcia City Council has undertaken a number of initiatives in its firm commitment to the environment. We believe that the future of this city must be a green, shared one where we all move forward in the same direction.” Iberdrola’s regional manager for large customers and public administrations, Enrique Planells, added that the partnership “allows companies to accelerate the development of a charging network that is accessible to all users and helps to encourage emissions-free transport that improves our residents’ well-being”.

Iberdrola is involved in several large-scale charging partnerships with Spanish cities. In June, the company opened Madrid’s largest fast charging hub with dozens of fast and ‘ultra-fast’ charging points. The company now operates nearly 10,000 public charging points across Spain, all of which use renewable energy.
