Each vehicle will be equipped with three (out of max. 5) 105 kWh LFP batteries that run an XD Electric powertrain – with either 170kW or 220kW power. Additionally, the vehicles will be fitted with a 90 kW ePTO in order to generate energy for equipment such as loading cranes.

Equipment is important to mention here, because city officials have ordered the trucks in a variety of bodywork configurations based on need. This includes 13 rear-end loaders, 10 crane & hook lift vehicles, and 17 front loaders – a combination which they say will enable them to collect “all types of household and office waste emission-free”.

A spokesperson for the City said that bodywork compatibility was a key factor in its decision to order the DAF XD, as it makes it possible to mount equipment in a variety of positions on the chassis and move battery packs where needed. Additionally, they stated that the DAF XD is beneficial for waste collection in dense urban environments thanks to a low entry step, strong visibility, and a low belt line.

No information has been provided on the charging infrastructure or the price paid for the trucks, but city officials did confirm that the vehicles will be supplied by the DA dealers Truckland and VDL-Translift, which will also perform some bodywork to the trucks.

Roland Heijnen, Director of Waste and Resources for the Municipality of Amsterdam, said: “We are pleased with the cooperation with DAF dealer Truckland and have full confidence in a sustainable future with these electric waste trucks in Amsterdam.”
