New EV charging hub for Honolulu Airport
The new charging bays are located on the ground floor of airport’s ‘International Parking Structure’, and deploy standard Type 1 (J1772) connectors. While information has not been provided on the exact power of the chargers, we can surmise from this connection type that it is a slower AC charging outlet designed for overnight or long-term usage. In terms of pricing, it’s time dependent.
From 9AM to 5PM, charging costs $0.44/kWh; from 5PM to 9AM, it costs $0.57/kWh. Payment is done through the OpConnect mobile app, and standard airport parking rates also apply. According to the Hawaii Airport website, this can cost $27 for 8 or more hours, which could make a charging session rather expensive. This means that, despite the chargers being open to the public, it is likely only economical to use them if you are travelling somewhere or visiting the airport for another reason.
In terms of costs, the Hawaii Department of Transporttion (HDOT) states that the project came to $539,000, including hardware and installation. Ed Sniffen, HDOT’s Director, said: “The new charging stations offer EV drivers a convenient and reliable charging option while at the airport. Hawai’i consistently ranks among the top states for electric vehicle adoption, so it’s important that we continue to invest in charging infrastructure that supports the electrification of our transportation system.”
