Munich Airport opens Bavaria’s largest EV charging park

Munich Airport has inaugurated Bavaria’s largest electric vehicle charging park in parking garage P44, featuring 275 charging points powered by rooftop solar. The €5.2 million project forms part of the airport’s NetZero 2035 strategy and its drive to expand sustainable mobility.

The facility, located in parking garage P44 opposite the LabCampus innovation hub, offers 275 charging points, making it one of Germany’s largest public charging parks. The project was developed in cooperation with regional companies, with a total investment of around €5.2 million.

The 138 charging stations offer a nominal output of 11 kW, with peak outputs of up to 22 kW. The stations are supplied with renewable energy from two photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the P44 and P43 parking garages. Together, the 7,216 PV modules deliver a peak output of three megawatts.

Bavarian Minister-President Dr Markus Söder underlined the state’s e-mobility ambitions: “Munich Airport is our gateway to the world and also a gateway to e-mobility. Bavaria is continuing to massively expand e-mobility and renewable energies. We are already the German federal state with the most electric cars and the most charging points. By 2030, we aim to triple the number of charging points.”

“With today’s commissioning of the charging park for electric cars and the three-megawatt PV system, we are sending a clear signal for climate protection,” said Albert Füracker, Finance Minister and Chairman of Munich Airport’s Supervisory Board. “The project shows that Munich Airport is not only Bavaria’s gateway to the world, but also a strong driver of innovation in the state.”

Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers added: “Parking spaces with charging facilities for electric vehicles are a basic requirement for sustainable mobility on the campus. The creation of the charging park is therefore an important part of Munich Airport’s climate protection strategy. It allows us to link various sectors at our airport – namely energy generation, mobility, and the power grid infrastructure. In this respect, this project serves as a model and blueprint for further construction projects across the entire campus.”

The airport currently operates more than 1,140 publicly accessible charging points, including infrastructure for vehicles and equipment on the airport aprons. Munich Airport’s NetZero 2035 Strategy aims to eliminate climate-damaging CO2 emissions by 2035. This includes directly controllable emissions from energy production and vehicle operation, as well as indirect emissions such as those generated by travel to and from the airport.
