Volkswagen pauses ID. Buzz production

Volkswagen will pause production at its commercial vehicles plant in Hannover for one week in October, coinciding with the Lower Saxony autumn holidays. The factory produces the all-electric ID. Buzz van as well as the combustion-powered Multivan.

VW attributes the move to declining demand for light commercial vehicles in Europe and slower-than-expected growth in EV demand. A spokesperson told the German Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung the measure provides “the necessary flexibility to adapt production planning to changed market demand.”

VW has also struggled with a flawed launch of the all-electric ID. Buzz in the US, where the model was intended to follow in the footsteps of the classic Bulli among Californian surfers. Shortly after the US launch in autumn 2024, the first 5,000 vehicles were recalled for an embarrassing reason: the third-row seats were too wide and did not meet US safety standards. In July, deliveries of additional vehicles to the US were temporarily halted but were soon resumed.

Delivery numbers for the ID. Buzz have risen significantly this year across all markets, but still fall short of expectations. According to the report, the company delivered 27,600 ID. Buzz vans worldwide in the first half of 2025, a 70 per cent increase over the same period in 2024. Order intake was reportedly up 42 per cent compared with the first half of 2024.

However, VW Commercial Vehicles is said to have cut the number of vehicles planned for production at the Hannover plant by 21,000 units this year, including both the ID. Buzz and the combustion-powered Multivan. No other models are currently produced at the facility. The figure comes from employee sources cited by the HAZ. The original planned volume is unknown.

VW Commercial Vehicles has already responded to weak demand with two measures: summer plant holidays were extended from three to four weeks, and production was paused accordingly. Since 1 September, the standard collective-agreement 35-hour week has resumed; previously, employees had worked 37.5 hours per week under a special arrangement.

To boost sales, VWCV is currently running a “Maker Month.” During the campaign, commercial customers can lease the ID. Buzz and the e-Transporter built by partner Ford Otosan in Turkey under special conditions. Combustion-powered models are also available as part of the offer.

I would attribute it to the price they are charging. I'd like an ID Buzz but I'm not paying that.

I agree - it's far too expensive. Also too expensive to be used during clement weather & impossible to park in cities which makes it impractical for daily use.

The electric van is too expensive for the Canadian market. Although I did spot one in Calgary the other day.

The range is simply a joke especially for people in the US.

I don't quite understand why they haven't gone full "Campervan" with it, and why it doesn't have retro cutesie circular headlights.

I love the Buzz, but the price? I owned a '72 bus. Simple, cool, and economical. The Buzz is cool, but little else. Way over priced for its market.

If the van was a hybrid I think it would fix a lot of issues for the Canadian market. the range is way to low and it was meant to be a travel and camper van. How would you get across Canada?

Agreed with everyone else, very cool vehicle too expensive and range is too short. Marketing/ sales flop.

The ID.BUZZ was embarrassingly let down by the over reliance on nostalgia marketing and upmarket orientation, not unlike the Fiat 500e... The ID BUZZ is basically a Range Rover competitor, competing in the same market for rich families who would already be flocking towards an SUV Audi Q5-Q8 etron etc It's all about maxing profit margins, people, and it often doesn't pay off...

Living in Spain, I have only ever seen one, and that is a sponsored one for an estate agent here. They have two major flaws..1. There range is ridiculously low for a campervan. 2. They are far too expensive for something you can barely get to the next seaside resort in, and back ,without (yawningly) charging it for what will seem like a long time. Big mistake not making it a hybrid.

Too expensive and EV market is not the future in the US. Why no hybrids? VW is really a mess right now. The Buzz should be $40,000 and a hybrid. Bad decisions by VW.

Put a real engine / hybrid in it - reduce the cost and we have a deal…..living in Canada, dreams of all out EV’s is simply BS….

I wanted the ID Buzz but what turned me off is the price and the range. For the measly range of 231-234 miles it's just too expensive and not worth it. Volkswagen should lower the price and increase the range to a minimum of 350 miles at 80% battery charge. Volkswagen failed to consider that most of us Americans love long drives (Interstate). We do not want to make frequent stops just to charge and that will cost more money with frequent charging. If Volkswagen lowers the price and increases the range, I will definitely get the ID Buzz.

The ID Buzz should never have been released. As everybody can see, incl Volkswagen, it's too heavy, too expensive and heavily range-constrained. It is a bad design. And they know it. The shape of the body makes it an instant hit, they just failed to execute on everything else.
