BP Pulse and Moto to roll out electric truck charging on UK motorways

BP Pulse, the EV charging arm of BP, has teamed up with Moto, the UK's largest motorway services operator, to install high-powered electric truck chargers at key motorway service areas.

A total of 300 charging bays at 23 locations are planned for completion by 2030. The companies involved have announced that each site will feature six pull-through bays equipped with Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS), and will be compatible with both CCS and MCS standards.

The first three sites have already been announced, with charging hubs set to open at Moto locations in Lymm, Toddington North, and Toddington South. The first truck charging site is expected to go live during 2026, although it has not been specified which location will be first to open.

Regarding the other locations, these haven’t been revealed yet either. However, BP Pulse has stated that the partnership will focus on the UK’s “primary motorway corridors” as part of an effort to build multi-energy truck hubs across the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) routes. In the UK, this network encompasses major highways including the M25, M1, M4, M5, M6, M20, and others.

There are other efforts here to accommodate truck and freight traffic from mainland Europe; BP’s fuel and charge card is compatible both in the UK and Europe, while the collaboration also sits alongside BP’s acquisition of one of Europe’s largest truck stops in Ashford, Kent, which is also set to gain EV charging infrastructure. BP says this site will enable it “to create a cross-border network of high-powered, strategically located truck charging facilities.”

Moto CEO Ken McMeikan said: “I am really excited about our plans with bp to provide electric charging stations for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)… By partnering with bp pulse, we are delivering the infrastructure and innovation electric fleets need, making our vision for long-haul electrification more practical and accessible.”

Nigel Head, VP European E-Truck, bp pulse, added: “This is a natural next step in our ambition to support fleets as they transition to electric trucks. We’ve proven in Germany that this model works, and now we’re applying that same expertise to the UK. Moto’s locations offer an ideal foundation, with strong motorway access and a customer base that will serve both UK and European freight operators.”
