MAN paves the way for electric bus assembly in Azerbaijan

MAN and Improtex Trucks & Buses have signed an MoU agreement to begin jointly assembling Lion's City E buses in Azerbaijan. The first units are expected to roll out in 2026.

The partnership centers on MAN’s Lion’s City E model, with production set to follow the xKD model. The buses will arrive in Azerbaijan partially assembled along with the remaining components, with final assembly then carried out locally. Meanwhile, MAN subsidiary Traton will provide on-site support in quality management and employee training.

This is just the first step towards a broader partnership in which “local value creation” will be continously expanded; in other words, until certain components for the buses can be locally produced as well as shipped. MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp travelled to the Azerbaijani capital of Baku for the signing ceremony, where he met with both the country’s deputy minister of economic affairs as well as the president of Improtex Trucks & Buses. The Munich-based manufacturer aims to further expand into non-EU countries and sees the Azerbaijan launch as an important next step.

“With this agreement, we are opening a new chapter in our international cooperation. Azerbaijan is investing in sustainable urban mobility – and we are contributing our expertise in the field of electromobility. Together, we are making an important contribution to clean and efficient transport solutions in the region,” said Vlaskamp.

Barbados Oktay, Head of Bus at MAN Truck & Bus, added: “International business is of great importance to us. We see enormous growth potential in markets outside Europe and are consistently driving forward our internationalisation. The partnership with Azerbaijan shows how we want to leverage this potential together with strong local partners.”
