Tesla launches its new Model Y in the USA

Tesla has release the 338 kW Performance version of the updated Model Y in the USA. The timing was fortuitous for the company: The sales launch coincided with the with the expiry of the US tax credit for electric cars. Customers had just a few hours left to secure this advantage when purchasing.

The performance version of the revamped Model Y ‘Juniper’ has been available in Europe since the end of August, and now customers in the US can also order the 338 kW SUV. Tesla officially added the top-of-the-range version to its configurator on 30 September, just a few hours before the US government’s £7,500 tax credit for electric cars expired. There is likely a calculation behind this, as the car manufacturer probably wanted to generate a rush for the model and generate a large number of orders right at the official market launch.

The cut-off date for the subsidy is the date the order is received, not the date the vehicle is delivered or registered. Prices start at $57,500 in the manufacturer’s home market. For this, you get a generously equipped sports SUV that not only impresses with its performance, but is also a good everyday and long-distance companion. The range is 308 miles or just under 500 kilometres, according to US standards.

Thanks to its two drives, the most powerful version of the Model Y has electric all-wheel drive and 338 kW and 660 Nm, which can accelerate the two-tonne SUV from zero to 100 kph in 3.3 seconds. The top speed is 250 kph. A firmer suspension with adaptive dampers is designed to improve handling.

Despite its brute driving performance, the performance variant is visually understated. The sports version differs from the standard Model Y only in its subtly redesigned front and rear aprons, a small carbon rear spoiler and a logo on the tailgate. Tesla has also spruced up the interior. Heated and ventilated seats with high side bolsters provide decent lateral support and a sporty feel. Badges with the new Performance logo, which looks very similar to the Plaid badge on the Model S and Model X, have also been added to the seats.
