India: BillionE and Hindalco deploy 10 electric heavy-duty e-trucks
BillionE and Hindalco’s new collaboration marks the launch of the first heavy-duty electric freight corridor in Gujarat, a key industrial state in the western part of India. The metals producer uses them on a 160-km route connecting its copper smelting and continuous cast rod facilities in Dahej and Asoj, respectively.
ChargeZone, India’s largest EV charging network, founded by Kartikey Hariyani, who also established BillionE, serves as the backbone of the zero-emission freight corridor. BillionE utilises the company’s charging stations at Karjan, Bharuch, and another point along the 160-km route.
Commenting on the new joint initiative with Hindalco, BillonE CEO Sanjeev Kulkarni said, “Launching this heavy-duty electric freight corridor is more than just a milestone. It represents a transformation in how India moves goods at scale.” Bishnu Agarwal, Functional Head, F&C Copper business of Hindalco Industries, highlighted the commercial gains, saying “we are reducing our carbon footprint while improving efficiency with quieter, low-maintenance, and future-ready vehicles.”
The ten electric heavy-duty trucks BillionE has just delivered, and the five more it plans to supply within three months have a 55-tonne capacity. The trucks’ GVW rating and images suggest the company is using Ashok Leyland’s Avtr 55T Electric for this deal with Hindalco. Last year, BillionE had ordered 180 electric trucks from the Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer, comprising three models: Avtr 55T Electric, BOSS 19T Electric, and BOSS 14T.
The Avtr 55T Electric is a 55-tonne 4×2 tractor designed for port, steel/cement, and coal applications, featuring a 300 kWh battery pack and a 220 kW motor and offering a range of up to 180 km. In the future, Hindalco plans to procure more electric trucks from BillionE and use them for secondary transport across Vapi, Daman, and Silvassa, further making its operations in Gujarat more eco-friendly.
