PostNord to expand partnership with Einride

The Nordic postal service PostNord and the electric freight company Einride have announced a major expansion of their partnership. It will see PostNord double its electrified transport kilometers to 1.3 million km per year.

Details are a little bit thin here – Einride says this will cover “expanded operations” on “key logistics routes” around the Oslo region, specifically using Einride’s electric trucks, its intelligent freight mobility platform, and the Einride Saga AI route planning tool. But there’s no word on whether it means additional EVs in the PostNord fleet, or existing fleet EVs being deployed more regularly, or both. However, May-Kristin S Willoch, Head of Environment & DPO at PostNord Norway, did say: “With the expansion, a majority of our regional fleet in Norway is now fully electric” – implying that the EV fleet will be expanded.

There are some hints to what these ‘expanded operations’ might look like in future though; we saw last month how Einride and Postnord teamed up to perform the world’s first cabless autonomous border crossing using an Einride autonomous HGV on the Norway-Sweden border. Whether this sort of activity will be included in the expanded partnership remains to be seen.

Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, said: “Our growth strategy is rooted in deep, scalable partnerships and this demonstrates the long-term potential within our existing customer portfolio. Norway continues to lead by example in the transition to electric transportation, and we’re proud to deepen our impact here together with a forward-thinking partner like PostNord.”

Einride, a Swedish company, is undergoing a period of sustained growth. Earlier this month, it received $100m USD from EQT Ventures and other investors to develop both its electric and autonomous truck offering. It’s active in Europe, where it largely uses conventional electric trucks from manufacturers like Daimler Truck and Scania; plus the USA and UAE. In September, it also deployed an autonomous HGV on a public road in Belgium for the first time – although this did feature a remote operator.
