DiDi launches all-electric ride hailing service in Mexico City
The service is set to launch with an initial fleet of 500 EVs, which can only be operated by experienced drivers who must meet certain criteria in order to qualify for the ‘DiDi Premier’ service. This criteria includes completing at least 100 trips through the platform and receiving excellent customer reviews from them. Additionally, drivers will have to undergo ‘special training’ in driving the EVs and providing customer service.
The fleet itself will be made up exclusively of EVs from the luxury segment, and will feature safety cameras, passenger-controlled air conditioning, bottled water, tablets, and device charging facilities.
The initial fleet of 500 will increase exponentially in future, thanks to a one billion peso (€46.6m Euro) investment announced by DiDi towards the end of 2024. DiDi says it hopes to increase the number of all-electric vehicles in its corporate fleet to 100,000 across Mexico by 2030 through collaborations with manufacturers in China, such as BYD, GAC, and the Changan subsidiary Deepal.
The Chinese provider DiDi has been active in Mexico City since 2018. The Chinese company’s app established itself in the Latin American country within a few years – by 2022, it was already the most widely used mobility platform in Mexico, significantly overtaking industry giant Uber from its northern neighbour.
Carlos Torres, DiDi’s Mexico said: “DiDi Premier represents a new chapter for mobility in Mexico—one that combines environmental responsibility with high-quality service.”
