Royal Mail adds over 100 electric three-wheelers to UK delivery fleet
A total of 104 MEVs will be deployed in these cities, as well as areas of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Solihull, and the Scilly Isles ahead of Christmas. This includes a combination of both Paxster and Neomar D01 models, with the majority – 84 – coming from Paxster. The Paxster Cargo itself is a three-wheeled MEV with a range of 110km, 1250L cargo volume, and a top speed of 60km/h with zero tailpipe emissions.
The compact MEVs notably don’t require any dedicated EV charging infrastructure, and can be charged using a regular UK three-pin plug socket. Royal Mail has said this means they can be used at any of its delivery offices, including those that have been previously ruled out due to insufficient yard space or grid capacity. With the Paxster Cargo requiring a charging time of around 9 hours, it means that most of the MEVs will need to be charged overnight.
Mark Riley, Delivery Design Manager (Process and Equipment) at Royal Mail, said: “Our new micro electric vehicles are a smart solution for delivering more sustainably and efficiently, especially in busy urban areas. By replacing larger vans with MEVs, we’re cutting emissions, improving air quality, and helping our posties deliver faster in time for the festive season.”
It means Royal Mail now has more than 7000 electric vehicles in its fleet nationwide, with plans to invest in a further 1800 electric vans and charging infrastructure over the coming year.
