The Tsinghua-Seres Joint Research Centre, to give it its full title, was formally opened at an inauguration ceremony at Tsinghua University last week.

It will see both parties collaborate on new research, with Tsinghua leveraging its capabilities as one of China’s major research universities and Seres Group bringing to bear its experience in both vehicle development and battery production. All in all, it aims to examine battery chemistry, safety, production processes and system integration. Practically speaking, the research centre will offer lab facilities, testing equipment, and industry research reports; although no research or prototypes have yet been published.

At the inauguration on November 28, senior figures from both Tsinghua and Seres outlined how the research centre aims to tackle technical challenges in battery systems. According to CarNewsChina, Seres Group Chairman Zhang Xinghai commented on how ‘the facility will focus on battery and safety technology research’. The publisher added: “The centre will also investigate areas such as battery design, safety standards, and production methods”.
