Chinese startup ChingTao to build solid-state battery plant

Chinese startup ChingTao Energy Development has begun constructing a solid-state battery production facility in Kunshan, in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. The new factory is designed for an annual capacity of 10 GWh and is the company’s second battery plant.

Modular Li-ion cells: Varta Microbattery will be leading the new GIGA-LIB project to research production methods for modular lithium-ion cells, run by a consortium made up of companies Manz, M+W Germany, ThyssenKrupp and ZSW. The project is set to run for two years and is funded by the German Education and Research Ministry (BMBF) with about 5 million dollars.

Integration platform for power electronics: In the project Hi-LEVEL lead by Continental, eight partners have developed an innovative high-current printed circuit board for electric vehciles. It is said to be smaller, more powerful and more efficient than current models. The project was funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

Local Motors tests electric offroader: The U.S. company mainly known for its 3-D printed electric cars, is already working on its next project. The video shows the first all-electric “Rally Fighter” still without a body, but already up to speed.

Li-sulfur research: Researchers from Tsinghua University say they have developed a “promising strategy” to tackle the intrinsic problems of lithium metal anodes for Lithium sulfur batteries. Their graphene-modified Li anode coated by an in situ formed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) improved the Coulombic efficiency to 97 percent for more than 100 cycles.

BiCarMeet the BiCar: This EV crosses genres. It looks like a hooded Segway, drives like a car, and is almost as small as a bicycle. Developed by researchers at the School of Engineering at the ZHAW in Zurich, the three-wheeled BiCar is designed for sharing, only goes 30 kph, and is compact enough to fit eight of it in one parking space. A test fleet of 20 is said to be issued over the next two years while ZHAW is looking for sponsors.

Lightweight chassis: “LEICHT” (meaning “light” in German but here stands for Lightweight Energy-efficient Integrative Chassis with Hub-motor Technology) is the latest vehicle technology developed by Stuttgart University and the DLR (German aeronautics and space centre) within the DLR@Uni-Stuttgart project. LEICHT is now to be developed into a hardware prototype, funded with 507,000 euros by the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Sino-German electric motorcycle: GlobalDrive is a collaborative project between TU Munich and Chinese Tsinghua University in Beijing. Their latest development is a 100-kW electric motorcycle that will soon to compete against gas guzzling two-wheelers.

Tesla hacked: Thanks to Joe Pasqua, the Model S has been decoded and is open for knowledgeable IT people to re-programme – at least partially. The free app ‘Visible Tesla’ allows access to all basic functions like locking and unlocking. So far, Tesla has not shown any concern.

Ford-CMax-Energi-SolarSunny side up: Ford is to reveal its C-Max Energi as “Solar Concept” at the CES. The new PHEV features a so-called „solar concentrator“ that works like a magnifying glass. When parked under this canopy, focused sun-rays hit solar cells in the roof of the vehicle and charge the plug-in hybrid while the car autonomously follows the way of the sun rays. So far, the solar concept is not set for production.

Elio Motors trike debut: The company presents its new three-wheeler at this year‘s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The high-efficiency gas-powered vehicle is said to cost 6,800 USD (4,990 euros) and is scheduled for early 2015. Later versions might feature an electric motor.

Stability through selectivity: The professors Qiang Zhang and Fei Wei from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, have developed an ion selective membrane system to make lithium-sulfur batteries more stable. The membrane separates lithium and polysulfide ions, thus suppressing the destructive „shuttle-effect“ on the anode.
