Indian EV startup Simple Energy has unveiled what it claims is the longest-range electric scooter in the country – the Simple Ultra. The company has also rolled out a series of upgrades for the existing Simple OneS and Simple One electric scooters.

Targeting customers seeking maximum range and performance, the Simple Ultra sits at the top of the line-up. Simple Energy equips it with the largest battery yet fitted to an electric scooter in India, with an energy storage capacity of 6.5 kWh, enough to deliver an IDC-certified range of up to 400 kilometres.

Range anxiety is rarely an issue with electric two-wheelers, but long charging times can raise questions about everyday usability. While charging specifications are still awaited, the Simple Ultra’s claimed 400-kilometre IDC range would be sufficient to cover around two to three weeks of daily commuting, meaning customers would not need to charge it frequently.

Simple Energy has yet to disclose the output figures of the Simple Ultra’s motor, but it has revealed a 0–40 kph acceleration time of 2.77 seconds, which makes it the second quickest electric scooter in India. The new model achieves a top speed of 115 kph, which is also noteworthy.

The Simple OneS and Simple One now offer improved performance and range, additional functionality, and new ride features. The upgraded models are up to 8 kg lighter, have a reduced seat height of 780 mm, and offer improved under-seat storage capacity of 35 litres. Simple Energy has also introduced traction control and cruise control on the OneS and One, as well as four-level regenerative braking on the latter.

With a peak power output of 6.4 kW and 52 Nm of peak torque, the Simple OneS accelerates from 0–40 kph in three seconds and achieves a top speed of 90 kph. It has a 3.7 kWh battery that delivers an IDC range of 190 kilometres.

The Simple One is available in standard-range and long-range variants, with 4.5 kWh and 5 kWh batteries, respectively. The standard-range variant features the same motor as the Simple OneS, and while it takes 3.3 seconds to reach 40 kph, it can achieve the same 90 kph top speed. It can cover a distance of 236 kilometres on a single charge, according to IDC figures.

The long-range Simple One is the quickest electric scooter in India, accelerating from 0–40 kph in just 2.55 seconds. Simple Energy has increased the peak power of its electric motor from 8.5 kW to 8.8 kW, while keeping the peak torque unchanged at 72 Nm. It has also raised the top speed from 105 kph to 115 kph.

Simple Energy currently offers its electric scooters at 61 showrooms across key cities and also through India’s two largest e-commerce platforms, Amazon and Flipkart. By March, it aims to build a network of around 150 dealerships and 200 service centres.

Incorporated in 2019, the Bengaluru-based startup has raised $51 million (around €44 million) from investors and high-net-worth individuals to date. It aims to become EBITDA-positive by March, as it prepares for an IPO in the second half of the year, targeting proceeds of around $350 million (approximately €300 million).
