Svolt Energy unveils 80-kWh PHEV battery

Svolt Energy has presented an 80-kWh battery pack for plug-in hybrids, claiming it is the world's largest PHEV battery pack to date. Branded Fortress 2.0, the battery was presented at the company’s sixth Battery Day event, where the company also unveiled new fast-charging and semi-solid-state technologies.

Let’s first look at the new battery. The pack is aimed at large family PHEVs and is scheduled to enter mass production in March 2026. It is designed to deliver more than 400 kilometres of electric-only driving in plug-in hybrids.

The company says the highly integrated pack design improves volume utilisation and system energy density by six per cent. The cells support charging rates of up to 6C, enabling a 10 to 80 per cent charge in around ten minutes.

Svolt also provided an update on its semi-solid-state battery programme. Its first-generation high-nickel semi-solid battery, with an energy density of 270 Wh/kg, has reached small-scale production and is already being used in limited volumes by a European passenger car brand. According to earlier reports, this is likely BMW’s Mini brand. A mid-nickel semi-solid battery with 245 Wh/kg is planned for mass production from October 2026 for use in mid- to high-end electric cars.

In addition, Svolt unveiled its 3.5-generation ion oscillation pulse charging technology. Compared with earlier systems, it is said to reduce total charging time by around 25 per cent without increasing costs. The technology has completed extensive testing and is due to be introduced in customer vehicles from the third quarter of 2026.

Chinese media also reported on Svolt’s first quarterly profit in the fourth quarter of 2025, and is aiming for full-year profitability in 2026. Battery shipments are targeted to reach 61 GWh this year, up significantly on 2025 levels.
