Cellcentric awards development contract to Brusa HyPower
The Fuel Cell Interface (FCI) is a central component of Cellcentric’s next-generation fuel cell system, which is set to enter series production across various applications by the end of the decade. It functions as a DC/DC converter, converting the fuel cell voltage to the high-voltage network, monitoring the fuel cell, safely isolating it from the high-voltage network when necessary, and supplying high-voltage components within the fuel cell system with electrical energy, as Cellcentric explains.
As a joint venture between Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group, Cellcentric develops, produces, and commercialises fuel cell systems primarily for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, as well as for other non-vehicle applications. Founded in 2021, the company is constructing a dedicated factory in Weilheim an der Teck, Baden-Württemberg, though its completion has been delayed. Pilot production is already underway at another site in Baden-Württemberg.
According to Cellcentric, the collaboration with Brusa HyPower strengthens its global supply chain, ‘including the Asian market, which is considered a driver of growth and innovation.’ Brusa HyPower operates sites in Europe, the US, and Asia, making it ‘an ideal strategic partner.’ Brusa HyPower is part of the Swiss Brusa Group, which comprises three sister companies: Brusa Technology develops electric powertrain systems; Brusa Elektronik focuses on the next generation of inductive charging systems for automotive applications; and Brusa HyPower specialises in the mass production of power electronics. The latter was founded in 2021 as a spin-off of Brusa Elektronik AG.
In 2024, Brusa HyPower unveiled its latest generation of DC/DC converters and onboard chargers, albeit with a focus on battery-electric commercial vehicles and off-highway applications. However, synergies with the fuel cell solution for Cellcentric are clear.
“With our new generation of high-performance DC/DC converters, we are contributing our many years of expertise in power electronics to significantly advance the further development of cellcentric’s fuel cell technology. Together, we are shaping the future of climate-neutral mobility,” said Holger Fink, CEO of Brusa HyPower AG.
Markus Siegel, Global Head of Procurement and Aftersales at Cellcentric, added: “We are delighted to have gained a partner with an international presence, decades of expertise, and a high level of innovation for this project.”
