Lucid builds first mid-size model prototypes

Currently, the electric vehicle startup only offers the premium models Air and Gravity. Now, Lucid Motors has assembled the first prototypes of its upcoming mid-size SUV at its Arizona plant.

This announcement was made by Nick Twork, Head of Communications at Lucid. “Spent time in our prototype build area today watching the first full Lucid midsize vehicles come together,” Twork wrote. “Same Lucid DNA as Air and Gravity – space, efficiency, dynamics, and range – paired with dramatically improved manufacturability and cost structure. These are going to surprise people. More soon.”

As reported, Lucid plans to develop not just one mid-size model but three, aiming to enter the price segment of around 50,000 US dollars. This would make the models approximately $20,000 (currently around 16,900 euros) more affordable than the Lucid Air. In Germany, the Lucid Air is currently available from 85,900 euros, so the prices of the mid-size models could roughly align with the 70,000-euro range – comparable to current electric SUVs from premium manufacturers such as the BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC EQ, and Volvo EX60.

The PR chief at Lucid did not provide further details about the vehicles in his post on X. A rendering published alongside the post shows a vehicle in the shadow next to a Lucid Gravity – likely the aforementioned mid-size SUV. The rear window slopes significantly more steeply than that of the Gravity, suggesting a five-seater rather than a seven-seater. However, little else can be inferred from the new rendering.

In 2024, Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice-President of Design and Brand at Lucid Motors, announced three mid-size models but ruled out an electric estate. Based on Jenkins’ statements at the time, a saloon, an SUV, and an off-road model are considered the most likely options.

While the prototypes were assembled at Casa Grande, Lucid’s headquarters in Arizona, series production of the mid-size models is expected to take place at a different location. Statements by Interim CEO Mark Winterkorn suggest that the mid-size models will be produced at Lucid’s plant in Saudi Arabia.
