Hyundai Kona becomes brand’s first to receive UK EV grant

The electric SUV is Hyundai's first to become eligible for the grant, which provides a £1,500 discount to its sale price. Until now, Hyundai models were reportedly unable to receive the grant due to the lack of an official carbon emissions reduction target.

The grant will be available for all versions of the Hyundai Kona. It brings the price of the entry-level Kona Electric Advance down to £33,500, making it highly competitive with other EVs in this segment. Other trims also benefit from the grant: the N Line now begins at £37,000 while the N Line S and the top-end Ultimate both now start at £39.400.

Until now, no Hyundai EVs were eligible for the UK Electric Car Grant, which applies to EVs worth under £42,000 and is separated into two bands. Under the grant scheme, Band 1 cars can receive a maximum discount of £3,750, while Band 2 cars can receive up to £1,500. According to AutoExpress, none of Hyundai’s models were previously eligible due to the brand’s lack of a ‘Science Based Target’ for carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement.

In response to this lack of eligibility, Hyundai offered its own scheme, the Hyundai Electric Grant, which offered £1,500 off the Kona, Ioniq 5, and the Ioniq 9, as well as £3,750 off the INSTER. It’s unclear whether this ‘grant’ (which essentially amounts to repricing) will still apply to the Kona now that the UK ECG is in place. AutoExpress speculates that the the Kona has become eligible because Hyundai has presumably introduced an SBT for the EV, although this has not been confirmed by Hyundai.
