Transport for London awards TotalEnergies deal for 43 rapid chargers
TotalEnergies has secured the new contract through an official procurement process. The framework agreement with TfL includes the delivery of up to 43 rapid charging points, which will be ‘located near key routes used for essential road journeys typically made by high mileage, commercial users – including taxis and freight – as well as near high streets and local amenities,’ as stated by the London transport authority. Many of the new charging stations will be located in South London, including areas like Bromley, Lewisham, and Sutton.
This latest award marks the second contract TfL has awarded to TotalEnergies. Another provider, Zest, is also active in London, having already fulfilled several orders and installed around 40 rapid charging stations for TfL to date. These are currently the only two private contractors in the rapid charging sector. However, the authority has announced plans to launch further tender rounds in the coming months.
“A further batch of locations across the Transport for London Road Network is going to market within the next few months, demonstrating how TfL is working with the GLA [Greater London Authority] Group and other public sector partners to unlock public land and work with the private sector to help bring the infrastructure needed to keep London at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution,” TfL stated.
According to Transport for London, some 258,000 electric cars and vans are currently registered in the capital. These vehicles can use 27,980 public charge points – including 1,550 rapid chargers – representing around one-third of the UK’s total charging infrastructure.
However, the rollout is far from complete. Based on current demand forecasts, TfL expects London to require between 43,000 and 51,000 charge points by 2030, among them up to 3,500 rapid chargers.
David Rowe, TfL’s Director of Investment Planning, commented: We’re pleased to be playing our part in expanding the delivery of rapid and ultra-rapid charging bays across the capital. By unlocking our land to bring new EV bays forward, we’re working with both TotalEnergies and Zest to provide the infrastructure that Londoners need to have the confidence to transition to electric vehicles.”
“We are pleased to extend our partnership with TfL for this ambitious project,” added Nicolas Garnier, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Charging Solutions UK. “Through this collaboration, we will leverage our operational expertise as a charge point operator to support the expansion of a reliable, accessible and high‑quality charging network for drivers across London.” TotalEnergies currently operates around 78,000 charging points across Europe, including approximately 3,000 in London.
