Rivian R2 initially launches at $57,990
However, before the standard configurations arrive in 2027—starting at around $45,000—further premium configurations of the R2 will launch at the end of 2026, with Rivian already announcing a specific price of $53,990. Signs that the R2 was nearing its market launch had recently become apparent. The new model range was unveiled in spring 2024, and now the prices and details have been released.
With the launch of the R2 Performance, Rivian is adopting a top-down approach for the R2’s market introduction, unlike Tesla, for example. The largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the US typically starts with mid-range ‘Long Range’ variants, with the Performance model usually introduced later. For instance, the Juniper facelift of the Model Y launched in early 2025, followed by the updated Model Y Performance in August. In October 2025, the new base models were introduced—initially with the “Standard” designation, which was later dropped.
Back to Rivian: The R2 is based on an entirely new mid-size platform and is designed to offer a more affordable price than the previous R1 models, ‘without a compromise in capability,’ according to the company. The R2 model range delivers up to 482 kW, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.6 seconds in the Performance model, and can accelerate from 50 to 70 mph (80–112 km/h) in just 1.55 seconds. Rivian states the maximum range of the model range as 345 miles, equivalent to 555 kilometres—though this refers to the most efficient model in the range. The R2 Performance is rated at up to 330 miles (531 km).
R2 to initially launch with AWD; RWD to follow in 2027
The R2 Performance will feature, among other things, a semi-active suspension, a premium audio system with nine speakers, two midwoofers and two subwoofers, matrix LED headlights, and a ‘premium interior with Birch wood accents.’ Visually, the Performance model is distinguished by 21-inch wheels and yellow brake calipers. The initially offered ‘Launch Package’ includes options such as an exclusive green paint finish, a tow hitch with a two-tonne towing capacity, and lifetime ‘Autonomy+’ access to Rivian’s charging network. For the regular Performance model without the ‘Launch Package,’ this ‘Autonomy+’ access can be unlocked via a one-time payment or a monthly fee.
The R2 Premium, which will be available from the end of the year for $53,990, delivers 331 kW of power with its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and can accelerate to 96 km/h in 4.6 seconds—also with a range of 330 miles. The Premium model also includes features such as the audio system, matrix LED headlights, and heated and ventilated front seats but comes standard with only 20-inch wheels. The 21-inch wheels and tow hitch are available as optional extras.
The R2 Standard is set to follow in the first half of 2027, starting at $48,490. This model features rear-wheel drive and 257 kW of power, accelerating to 96 km/h in 5.9 seconds. In return, the range increases to the aforementioned 345 miles or 555 kilometres. The Standard model also has a simpler interior, a more basic audio system, and comes with 19-inch wheels. Here, the 20-inch wheels and tow hitch (also with a two-tonne capacity) are available as optional extras, as is the 331 kW all-wheel-drive system—though the latter comes with the simpler Standard interior.
“An additional R2 Standard variant will arrive in late 2027 starting around $45,000², offering 275+ miles of estimated range,” Rivian stated. This suggests that the standard equipment will be combined with a smaller battery, while the models introduced in more detail so far all use the same battery size. Further details about the $45,000 model will be announced ‘closer to production launch.’
“R2 embodies so many of our learnings that we have accumulated—the passion and attention to detail from our team is visible everywhere,” said RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian. “Thank you to all the teams across Rivian who poured their energy into bringing this incredible vehicle to life. I couldn’t be more excited.”
