Hackney begins EV charging rollout

The first nine of 50 new EV rapid chargers have gone live in the London borough of Hackney. It's part of a wider scheme to increase the level of street charging in the area.

The new charge points utilise ESB Energy chargers with up to 100kW output, which Hackney Council claims will deliver 30-minute recharging times. They’re specifically designed to ‘support residents who cannot access a home charger’; each charging tower is located in a large dedicated parking bay, which reportedly has enough space for delivery vans and commercial vehicles.

The chargers are owned and operated by ESB Energy. While anyone can access the chargers, the ESB Energy EV Plug In app can be used to take advantage of ‘heavily discounted’ charging rates for eligible local residents under the ‘Hackney Light and Power Plan’. This translates to a discounted overnight rapid charging rate between 1AM and 5AM, as well as a ‘preferential’ day rate on all rapid chargers in the area. Hackney Council has stated that, in order to be eligible for these rates, users must be Hackney residents with valid EV parking permits.

They are located at the following sites:

  • 47 Downham Road, De Beauvoir
  • 96 Downham Road, De Beauvoir (two chargers)
  • 224 Crozier Terrace, Hackney Wick
  • 2 King John Court, Hoxton East and Shoreditch
  • Alexandra Grove, Brownswood
  • 87 Stoke Newington Church Street, Stoke Newington
  • 1 Haberdasher Street, Hoxton West (two chargers)

These are just some of more than 50 rapid chargers set to be installed by 2030.

“This is a huge step forward in expanding our electric vehicle charging network. By rolling out rapid chargers across the borough, we’re supporting more residents and businesses to consider switching to electric vehicles. And this means cleaner air and quieter streets for everyone,” said Cllr Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport.

“Our discounted night-time tariff goes even further, supporting people who have to drive for work with access to fast and affordable charging, and helping remove barriers to going electric.”
