BYD plans to install its Flash Chargers at Sinopec petrol stations

BYD has formed a partnership in China with Sinopec to accelerate the expansion of its “Flash Charging” fast-charging network in the country. The move leverages Sinopec’s nationwide footprint of more than 30,000 petrol stations.

Chinese media reports state that BYD Company plans to use the nationwide network of Sinopec to expand the installation and operation of its fast-charging stations. BYD currently operates around 6,100 Flash charging stations in China and aims to increase this number to 20,000 by the end of the year.

The roll-out is based on BYD’s second generation of “Flash Chargers”. These T-shaped charging stations feature two charging cables that can both be connected to the same vehicle. A rail system allows the cables, which hang from above, to be easily manoeuvred despite their weight, which is due to cooling requirements. The key benefit: up to 1,500 kilowatts of charging power, available for all BYD vehicles equipped with second-generation Blade Batteries.

Officially, the framework agreement aims to establish a strategic collaboration to build a ‘smart energy ecosystem ‘. The partnership will be supported both industrially and financially and will cover not only charging networks but also the wider supply chain. It builds on existing cooperation between the two companies.

One thing is clear: Sinopec, with more than 30,000 petrol stations in China, is a highly sought-after partner. CATL has also long collaborated with the Chinese oil major to install battery-swapping stations at its sites. In the long term, the two companies aim to establish 10,000 swapping stations.
