Galp completes fast-charging corridor across Portugal

With the opening of a fast-charging park in Pombal near the Portuguese A1 motorway, charging provider Galp has completed its prestigious fast-charging corridor. This now connects Porto in the north of the country to the Algarve in the south along the A1 and A2 motorways.

As early as the beginning of 2026, Galp had already commissioned four charging hubs with a total of 48 high-speed charging points along the A2 motorway. Since then, an additional 48 high-speed charging points have gone live on the A1. Galp has now completed the entire charging corridor, which comprises 96 high-speed charging points across eight charging hubs along the 550-kilometre route between Porto and the Algarve.

The eight locations offer a combined capacity of 20 MW. Galp views this completed project as a milestone in establishing a seamless infrastructure to support electric mobility in Portugal, addressing the challenges of road transport electrification and the needs of medium- and long-distance travel.

“Electrification is a major challenge that the government is tackling with great commitment, driving it forward across various sectors of mobility and the economy. We pursue a market-oriented vision where freedom is paramount, and we maintain close dialogue with private providers. Portugal is now the sixth European country in terms of electric vehicle adoption, and the infrastructure must keep pace. Therefore, I would like to thank Galp and Brisa for expanding the high-speed charging stations that we are inaugurating here,” stated Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz during the inauguration of the charging hub at the Pombal service area on the A1.

“We have completed a corridor that connects the country from north to south with a fast, comfortable, and reliable charging network, supporting the growth of electromobility in Portugal and the needs of our customers,” said João Marques da Silva, Co-CEO of Galp. “We are pioneers in electromobility, and this investment underscores Galp’s commitment to the energy transition and the competitiveness of the Portuguese economy.”

Most of the high-speed charging stations in the corridor are supplied by Siemens. As Sofia Tenreiro, Siemens’ Country Manager for Portugal, wrote on LinkedIn, seven of the eight charging hubs are equipped with Siemens’ 400 kW Sicharge charging stations. Since each hub features six charging stations with two charging points each, this totals 42 charging stations and 84 charging points from Siemens. These charging stations were manufactured at Siemens’ plant in Corroios, Portugal, where the company has produced over 4,000 charging stations since 2020.
