Caltrans orders 524 additional EVs from Rivian
As revealed in public procurement documents, the new order includes 201 R1S SUVs and 323 R1T pick-ups – with a total value of approximately $52.7 million US dollars. Caltrans had already ordered 453 vehicles from Rivian in June 2025. Combined, this brings the total to 977 vehicles, worth around $97.1 million US dollars. According to media reports, this is the largest known fleet agreement for Rivian outside of its van programme with Amazon.
Public sector fleets gain importance for Rivian
The orders were placed under a nationwide framework agreement for vehicles with alternative drive systems. This is driven, in part, by Californian regulations on the electrification of public sector fleets, which stipulate that zero-emission vehicles must account for at least half of all new procurements in the light-duty service vehicle category. For Rivian, business with public sector fleets is gradually becoming more significant, though it remains relatively small. According to the company’s own statements, it had sold around 700 vehicles to public institutions by August 2025. The latest Caltrans order alone, comprising 524 vehicles, surpasses the majority of the manufacturer’s previous public sector contracts.
