Amazon has more than 30,000 Rivian electric delivery vans on the road

Amazon now operates more than 30,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian, having added roughly 10,000 units within the past year. The partners plan to expand the fleet further, with Rivian developing new variants featuring larger batteries and all-wheel drive to support broader route coverage.

Rivian remains Amazon’s largest supplier of electric delivery vans, although the retailer is pursuing a broader electrification strategy. Last summer, Amazon also ordered around 5,000 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The fully electric eVito and eSprinter are being rolled out to delivery partners in five countries, with more than half allocated to Germany.

This report, however, centres on Rivian’s Electric Delivery Van (EDV). Aside from roughly 600 units operating in Germany, Amazon and its partners deploy the model almost exclusively in the United States. According to Rivian’s latest annual figures, Amazon now runs more than 30,000 custom-built EDVs, delivering parcels across thousands of US cities.

Alongside the existing front-wheel-drive versions with a standard battery, Rivian is developing new variants featuring a larger battery and all-wheel drive, as outlined in its shareholder letter. The bigger pack is expected to extend range by around 30 per cent, while the additional drive unit should improve traction in demanding conditions such as mud and snow. Rivian aims to use these upgrades to expand route coverage within Amazon’s logistics network.

According to Rivian, the electric commercial vehicles were designed specifically for Amazon’s delivery process. Features such as an automatic bulkhead door, which opens as soon as the driver reaches their destination, enhance efficiency. Additionally, the total cost of ownership (TCO) is claimed to be lower than that of a combustion-engine van. Amazon remains a critically important customer for Rivian. The financial data for the fourth quarter of 2025 also highlights ‘strong’ deliveries of the EDV to Amazon.

Amazon and Rivian share a long-standing partnership: as early as 2019, both companies agreed that Rivian would build 100,000 electric vans for Amazon, to be delivered by 2030. To support this goal, Amazon has also become Rivian’s largest investor, although Rivian’s new partner Volkswagen could potentially surpass it in the future.
