Rivian joins ChargeScape network for utility-managed charging
Under the agreement, Rivian EV owners will be able to opt into utility programmes available through ChargeScape’s growing network of electricity providers. The companies say the integration will enable Rivian vehicles to provide additional flexible capacity to the grid, particularly during peak demand periods.
According to the companies, Rivian vehicles already provide grid-support capabilities through software-based energy management functions. By integrating with ChargeScape’s platform, these capabilities can be linked directly to participating utility programmes. Customers will continue to manage enrolment and charging through Rivian’s existing digital interfaces.
ChargeScape says the collaboration reflects a shared approach to vehicle-grid integration that emphasises interoperability, scalability and direct involvement from vehicle manufacturers. The platform supports managed charging programmes based on V1G functionality and also offers vehicle-to-everything (V2X) capabilities through participating utility partners.
“This is a significant step forward in aligning automakers around a common platform and charging standard,” said Joseph Vellone, CEO of ChargeScape. “Rivian’s partnership with ChargeScape will bring some of the largest batteries on the road onto an industry-owned, shared infrastructure. At a time of persistent inflation and high gas prices, we’re unlocking meaningful financial savings for EV drivers across America.”
ChargeScape was founded as a shared industry platform in 2023 to connect vehicle manufacturers and utilities. It was initially founded by BMW, Ford, and Honda. Nissan joined as an investor about a year later. Other automakers, including Tesla and Stellantis, also utilise the platform.
For Rivian, the agreement forms part of its broader strategy to leverage software-defined vehicle capabilities beyond transportation. The company says its vehicles can act as flexible energy assets while maintaining a seamless customer experience.
“Through this collaboration with ChargeScape and other partners, Rivian’s software-enabled vehicles are a perfect, nimble partner to help balance the energy grid and enable drivers to get more value out of their vehicle,” said Andrew Peterman, Director of Advanced Energy Solutions at Rivian. “These solutions demonstrate how electric vehicles can help reduce electricity costs and support a more resilient energy grid for everyone, whether you own an EV or not.”
