Lothian Buses expands electric bus fleet

Edinburgh-based Lothian Buses has expanded its electric fleet thanks to the introduction of nine new Wrightbus GB Kite Electroliners. These battery-electric single-deckers entered operation on the Service 36 route earlier this week.

The new buses are the result of a £3.6m investment by Lothian Buses in what it calls “wider efforts to modernise its fleet and operate a more sustainable transport network” across the Scottish capital. They entered service on 29 June 2026 and operate on the Service 36 route between Ocean Terminal and the Gyle Centre.

There, the Wrightbus GB Kite Electroliners purchased by Lothian Buses have capacity for up to 76 passengers with a strong emphasis on accessibility. “Features include a dedicated wheelchair space, a flexible multi-use area for buggies and mobility aids with optional buggy straps, and priority seating”, said Lothian Buses.

According to the Wrightbus website, the model features two battery options from CATL: one 528kWh option, or a space-saving 442kWh. Both options utilise a CCS2.0 charging socket, with additional options for up to 150kW plug-in charge rate or 360kW ‘opportunity charging’.

Dylan Dastey, Engineering Director, Lothian, said: “We’re delighted to welcome these new GB Kite Electroliner vehicles into service in partnership with Wrightbus. This investment is about delivering the best possible experience for our customers, with modern vehicles that are comfortable, accessible and reliable. The new buses provide a quieter and smoother journey while helping us continue to improve the quality of our network.”

Christian Reynolds, Managing Director of Wrightbus, said: “We are proud to be working with Lothian Buses as it continues its drive towards an all zero-emission fleet […] The introduction of the new vehicles forms part of Lothian’s ongoing programme of fleet investment, ensuring customers continue to benefit from modern, high-quality public transport that supports the city’s growing travel needs.”
