Genesis to manufacture the GV70 in the USA

Genesis has now officially confirmed that its Electrified GV70 electric SUV will be produced in the US. Production of the electric vehicle at Hyundai’s Montgomery plant in the US state of Alabama is scheduled to start in December 2022.

Mercedes opens battery assembly plant in Alabama

Mercedes-Benz has opened a battery factory near its US plant. However, the plant will not be manufacturing cells, as only purchased cells will be assembled into ready-to-install batteries for the EQE and EQS SUV models. A US cell manufacturing operation by Mercedes will be done jointly with AESC.

Hyundai to manufacture the GV70 in the USA

Li-Cycle announces plans for fourth battery recycling plant

The Canadian company Li-Cycle has announced its fourth commercial recycling plant for lithium-ion batteries. The new plant in Tuscaloosa in the US state of Alabama is expected to start operations in mid-2022. The Mercedes plant there will probably be an important supplier.

A ‘Center of Excellence’ is planned this year and will be followed by a pilot production by 2020 in order to reach what CEO Matthias Muller called “technological leadership in Europe by 2025.” Volkswagen also claimed to be in talks with partners to supply battery cells and hopes to close deals within 2017.

BMW turns battery supplier: Vattenfall is to acquire up to 1,000 EV batteries from the German carmaker this year. The 33 kWh batteries are also used in the BMW i3 but the utility is not looking to reuse EV batteries but to rather buy its own. They will serve as storage units for excess energy of Vattenfall’s wind farms, namely in Amsterdam, South Wales, and Hamburg.

Ferry retrofit: The Gee’s Bend Ferry in west Alabama will be transformed from diesel-powered into all-electric. The conversion is a joint federal-state project with a 1m dollar grant through the EPA and is believed to make the vessel the only all-electric passenger ferry in the United States.
