Ulrich Kranz, Anand Mahindra.

Ulrich-Kranz“I’m not a job hopper. […] I look at the product and the people behind the product. That’s why I wanted to join and help to set up everything so the company is ready to launch the product.”

Says the former head of BMWi, Ulrich Kranz when asked about his move to Faraday Future. He might not be a hopper but he does seems eager to innovate.

Anand-Mahindra“The government, in order to create the push, needs to create incentives whether they come through Central or the state governments, in order to provide a lower sticker price for cars.”

Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra is calling on Delhi to introduce EV subsidies. Not for ever, he clarifies, they could “taper down over time” in line with falling battery prices.

Reykjavík, Sean Clarke, Anand Mahindra.

Reykjavik-Stadtwappen“With electric cars becoming more common Reykjavík will increase the availability of charging stations – preferably at home, in parking garages and on specific locations within the city.”

This quote was taken from Reykjavík’s climate action plan until 2020. It looks as though Iceland’s capital will push electrification, as well as public transportation and bicycles.

Sean-Clarke“I think that electric propulsion technologies are going to greatly improve aircraft design over the next few decades.”

Sean Clarke is the principal investigator for the X-57 project at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, which is looking at how electric propulsion technology can improve an airplane’s performance. The lower weight of the engine would i.e. allow for smaller wings or even multiple engines for better lift off.

Anand-Mahindra“We’ve seen what’s happened to the price of solar energy as the price of photovoltaic solar cells has come down, and we think the same thing is going to happen with batteries.”

Anand Mahindra, chairman and managing director of the Mahindra Group, is certain that as the purchasing price and operating cost of small electric vehicles will decrease, mobility providers such as taxis and Uber are going to find EVs “unbeatable” for their fleet.

Anand Mahindra, Henrik Fisker, Stephan Winkelmann.

Anand-Mahindra“I personally believe the GenZe is an assault on one of the biggest, most virulent social problems we have today and that is the tendency of us, as individuals, whenever we are confronted by challenge to the community, to the commons, like the climate change problem, our reaction is it is somebody else’s problem to solve, that is not my problem to solve, and we look at government, we look at neighbouring countries, we rarely think of it as our problem.”

Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra, spoke at the launch of the GenZe electric scooter in Oakland. The city utilises the electric two-wheeler for its new scooter sharing system that features a solar charging station.

henrik-fisker“Yes we should eat healthy, and salad every day, but you don’t want just salad… there’s a point where you just want a steak, or fish and chips, or whatever.”

Henrik Fisker had a strange reply when asked why he moved away from electric super cars just to spoil the Fisker Karma with a V8 engine as VLF Destino. Bad karma.

Stephan-Winkelmann“If we have the chance to have a full electric vehicle which could have the same price and performance for an SUV, I would say let’s go for it. But this is not the case at this stage of technology.”

Lamborghini Chef Stephan Winkelmann is adamant that there will be no electric super cars from his stable – at least not at the current state of technology.

Sergio Marchionne, Anand Mahindra, Kazuhiro Tsuga.

Sergio-Marchionne“I keep on running into this fundamental economic obstacle of overcoming the cost equation of electrification. You can’t. You can’t unless there is a wholesale change and a fundamental shift in the pricing structure of cars.”

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, who will soon hand over the reigns, remains an EV sceptic. He has however, driven the electrification of some of the models and has just pushed the launch of the hybrid Chrysler mini-van forward a year.

Anand-Mahindra“We think that plug in electrics have a very important role in the new eco system. If we just add that little touch of excitement which all vehicles purchases need to have, that emotion, that missing ingredient, I think we could be on the threshold of a real boom in electric cars.”

Anand Mahindra, Chairman and MD of the company of the same name, believes that all that is holding back EVs is the “perception that electric cars are only for the greens of the world.” This image however is changing with the Formula E and Tesla.

Kazuhiro-Tsuga“Our policy is to avoid a situation where Tesla wants to make more cars but doesn’t have enough batteries.”

Panasonic Chief Executive Kazuhiro Tsuga on the substantial investment in Tesla’s Gigafactory of which Panasonic is one of the main partners.
