Japan’s MK Group uses electric BMWs as taxis

Japan’s MK Group has added 35 BMW electric cars in its taxi divisions in Tokyo and Kyoto. In the Japanese capital, the company is now using 20 BMW i7s, while in Kyoto a further ten BMW i7s and five BMW iXs have entered service.

QuantumScape opens R&D lab in Kyoto

Solid-state battery specialist and Volkswagen partner QuantumScape is expanding into the Asia-Pacific region and has announced the opening of a subsidiary in Kyoto, Japan, for this purpose. The new site will have an R&D laboratory that is scheduled to go into operation this year.

GS Yuasa to expands hybrid battery production capacities

The Japanese battery specialist GS Yuasa has decided to at least double its production capacities for lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid vehicles. To this end, the company’s subsidiary Blue Energy is strengthening its production lines in Kyoto and building a second plant at the same location.

E-buses from BYD headed to COP26 in Glasgow & Kyoto

Major electric bus maker BYD has received orders from the UK and Japan, and the US to deliver zero-emission vehicles. At least the electric buses headed for Glasgow and Kyoto will make for a sight, whereas the EVs going to the US will go there silently.

Toyota’s flouride ion battery with 1,000 km range

Toyota is working with scientists from the University of Kyoto on a new fluoride ion battery, which should offer about seven times as much energy per unit weight as conventional lithium-ion batteries and could enable electric vehicles to drive 1,000 kilometres on one charge.
